Who we are
Students for Global Democracy Uganda (SGD-Uganda) was founded in 2005 in Uganda by a group of visionary young people under the inspiration of Mr. Gesa Munabi Mike who is also currently the President of the Organization. Having made an in-depth assessment of the needs of the students community within the wider needs of the people of Uganda, and coupled with the trend in citizens’ demand for active participation and empowerment in political, social, economic and specifically in democracy and governance issues in Uganda and Globally, SGD-Uganda set out to become a voice and platform upon which advocacy and lobby for students needs and wants as citizens can be promoted.
In October of 2005, Mike Gesa Munabi and his colleagues with a focus geared towards building outstanding young people, mostly students, full of vigor, enthusiasm, love and compassion for humanity, inspired an idea for registering a predominantly student community needs inspired and led organization (SGD-Uganda) to be a platform of empowering young Ugandans, principally students with the knowledge of democracy, governance and sustainable development, to effectively enable them participate in the democratization process and pushing an agenda for development sustainably through civil action in their country.
They urged each other at their first initiation meeting, to invest in their full potential and personal abilities, and engage other young Ugandans in efforts to enhance peoples’ active participation in decision making at all levels, conduct research and information dissemination, demanding accountable exercise of political authority, engage in conflict resolution, advocate and lobby for equity, equality, fairness and social justice for all persons to save humanity, especially the vulnerable young people, disabled, women and children from the devastations of bad politics, bad governance, degenerated morality, and human greed which have resulted in misery, squalor, intolerance, unforgivingness, hate, vengeance and many abuses plus violations manifested in corruption, ethnic-rivalries, gender-based violence, communal violence, family breakdown, civil war, severe hunger and malnutrition, environmental degeneration, acute humiliating poverty, disease and forced displacement and migration. All of the above are the hallmarks of negative peace, security, stability and development, the challenge of everyone in today’s global community.
SGD-Uganda is a Ugandan locally registered students led organization with registration No. 120563 under the Company Act of the Republic of Uganda. It is a non profit-making, non political and non discriminating organization that recognizes the value of making friends, building partnerships and networks, and respect for human diversity in opinions to promote human dignity.
The Vision of SGD-Uganda is “An enlightened and empowered student community participating effectively in the democratization process and sustainable development of their communities, nation and world.”
Its Mission is to “Empower students with knowledge and skills of applying principles of democracy, governance and sustainability in personal, community and nation development.”
