Sponsor a child

There is a huge number of children here in Uganda whom various undesirable circumstances have plunged into immense vulnerability and they crave every night and day for any hand that is stretched out to save. Some have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, Cancer, political instability; others have been abandoned on the streets or forced into marriage by culturally crooked parents at tender ages.

Others were born with severe deformities on their bodies within grinding poverty-stricken homes. They have suffered malnutrition and lack of medical and emotional care and support.
Though not all, several good hearted individuals and organizations have taken up a noble task of gathering these into orphanages and other social homes and are taking care of them, but with an obvious insufficiency of resources and support. Here at Love and Serve Africa, we enable you to extend support to one such or several of them, with various means to choose from.
As earlier mentioned, you have a variety of means through which you can reach out to these needy little ones.

One option may be through meeting their school fees or any other scholastic needs. It is worth noting that while most of these children have been placed in the undesirable conditions they are in, some, and indeed most of them have humongous talents, gifts and potentials - so evident- that God has created in them. We do belief without any shadow of doubt that educating these young ones and equipping them with various skills can never be regretted in the near future. We are immensely disheartened while watching in vain a wasted talents and potentials in any human beings and we do believe that no matter how small you think your donate.

At Students for Global Democracy Uganda, we're working to spread the word in communities and halls of government about how to best invest in kids so we can achieve the biggest results for the littlest members of our global family.

We speak out on three broad areas that are vital to the growth of a child:

In addition to our holistic advocacy work for the health, education and protection of every child, right now Students for Global Democracy Uganda is directing our energy on two specific campaigns for kids: vaccines and early childhood development.

 SGD Uganda Child Sponsorship:

Education is an internationally recognized basic human right. In 1990, the Education for All (EFA) commitment was launched to ensure that by 2015 all children, particularly girls, those in difficult circumstances and those belonging to ethnic minorities, have access to free and compulsory primary education of good quality. International leaders also recognized the importance of achieving education for all, making the achievement of universal access to primary education Millennium Development Goal 2.

We have a way to go to reach the goal of Education for All. A 2007 UNESCO and UNICEF report addressed the need for a human rights-based approach to education that goes beyond goals of universal access and quality education. The report highlights three interrelated rights that, when implemented, help ensure all children have the opportunity to attend school and receive a quality education in a safe, respectful environment:

  • The right of access to education - Education must be available for, accessible to and inclusive of all children.
  • The right to quality education - Education needs to be child-centered, relevant and embrace a broad curriculum, and be appropriately resourced and monitored.
  • The right to respect within the learning environment - Education must be provided in a way that is consistent with human rights, equal respect for culture, religion and language and free from all forms of violence.

There are over two million children in Uganda today who have lost families due to the AIDS pandemic or armed conflicts within the region. Many more are living with HIV infected parents in poverty-stricken communities all over the country.

It is due to this background that the sponsorship initiative was started by Students for Global Democracy Uganda as one of the ways to ensure equitable access to quality education among orphans and other vulnerable children. With the help of community leaders, orphaned and other vulnerable children are identified in different communities.

The sponsorship initiative was established to connect orphaned children to loving families with an opportunity of assisting them to meet basic services such as food, education, scholastic materials, shelter and clothing. Through this initiative Students for Global Democracy Uganda is able to support overwhelmed families with orphans that have excelled but failed to get school fees and also strengthen the capacity of the caretakers i.e. parents, grandparents and guardians so that they can care for the children effectively.
